What is the mandate (purpose) of Apex Secondary?An alternative to the regular system, with a specialty in behavioral and emotional management and therapy.
What Grades are taught at Apex Secondary?Grade 8 through 12.
Can students graduate from Apex Secondary?Yes. Students can and have graduated with a regular Provincial Grade 12 Graduation (Dogwood) that entitles them to attend any post-secondary institution in British Columbia. Past students have attended and graduated from local universities.
How do you get into Apex?Obtain application form from school (Secretary)/or this website and arrange a meeting with Mitch Quinn the School Coordinator.
How long is the wait list?Varies from month to month. Spring and Summer are optimal application times to ensure following September Intake.
Is there continuous intake?Yes. New intakes are usually timed with the natural semester breaks.
How do you prioritize applicants on waiting list?We use the following criteria for determining placements:
Is there a part-time component of the program?Not currently, but we are looking at offering alternatives in the future.
Do we (Apex) supply transportation?No. Our students have utilized transit and car pooling, which have proven successful.
Does Apex offer smaller student to teacher ratios (Class sizes)?In some cases. Student's in Grade 8 tend to have a 16 to 1 ratio. It progressively increases to a 24 to 1 ratio in the senior classes. There are special classes for smaller group work.
What kind of student attends Apex Secondary?The students of Apex come from a vast range of backgrounds. They tend to be students who found the mainstream school system limited in the amount of specialized services and require further assistance. The students struggles have ranged from a mixture of complicated emotional difficulties, such as post-traumatic stress and depression to the more habitual behaviors associated with dysfunctional believe systems and culture. The students abilities and diversity are similar to any other school population in the district.
Are substance abuse issues a problem at Apex?Due to the emotional nature of many of our students difficulties, when they first come to Apex some have developed their own methods of coping with their difficulties, including drugs. Apex is the most supervised school in the district and has a trained staff that are experts in dealing with such issues. Not only due we have a clear drug policy, but also the means to support rehabilitation and safer choices.
Does Apex accept Volunteers?We encourage parents, family and community members to volunteer at the school. There are numerous opportunities, please contact the school for further details.
Do we have a parent-teacher night?We meet with parents on a regular basis and whenever required. Our parents tend to prefer a meeting time around their schedule, rather than a specific one time only meeting.
