A Message from the Principal
Welcome to Blacklock Fine Arts Elementary School!
Last year was an exciting year at Blacklock Fine Arts! Students experienced success in both the arts and their academics. We celebrated the opening of our art gallery and the learning opportunities provided by several artists in residence. As a school we embraced the Reading Powers – Connect, Visualize, Question, Infer and Transform – and learned together about the importance of reflection on what skills good readers and good artists employ to be successful. The improved reading scores for all of our classes were a direct result of the specific and intensive teaching and quality learning experiences provided for students throughout the year.
As we begin the 2009/2010 school year, we are excited about the opportunities that we will have to work with your children and to share the joy of learning with them. Blacklock Fine Arts provides students with a different kind of learning than many schools can offer. We are confident that the learning experiences they have this year will be rich and meaningful, enhanced through the integration of the B.C. core curriculum with dance, drama, music and visual arts.
We are beginning a second year with a school goal focused on the improvement of student competency in literacy – in reading and in the arts. Last year, students demonstrated significant growth in the area of reading – particularly in reading fiction. This year, while continuing to emphasize the improved reading of fiction, staff will focus on helping students read nonfiction texts more effectively. We will continue to promote student reflection and self-awareness about the strategies that make students excellent readers and successful artists, in all the disciplines. We are looking forward to sharing successes and to soliciting your support throughout the year as we work together to improve and to celebrate student success.
There are many ways for students and parents to get involved at Blacklock Fine Arts Elementary. We encourage you to embrace those opportunities this year and to make 2009/2010 an exceptional year!
Sincerely,
Jon Bonnar

What Is An Integrated Fine Arts School?
The development of meaningful connections between the arts and the other areas of the school curriculum forms the essential framework of an integrated fine arts philosophy. Students at Blacklock Fine Arts Elementary School experience learning in a different way. Classes are organized into learning pods – groups of four classes with teachers trained in both the core curriculum and one of the arts: Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts. Students spend time with each teacher and each art throughout the week. Teachers plan together and create common goals and themes and students work both in their core classes and in their arts classes with those themes.
Learning looks different at Blacklock Fine Arts because teachers build connections between the subject areas and find ways to link the various core topics with each other. Emphasis is placed on learning through and about the arts using a variety of teaching strategies that embrace many kinds of intelligence. Students are given many rich and engaging learning experiences that enhance young people’s intellectual, artistic, personal and social development.
It is important that students are well prepared in the core curriculum and the arts provide a powerful vehicle for helping students learn the essential lessons. It is also important that students develop a high level of competency in each of the arts and that the arts are celebrated not just as tools for learning but also as subjects by themselves. This interweaving of teaching concepts and skill development is the foundation on which all teaching and learning is built at Blacklock Fine Arts.
